A day in DC

We went into DC for the day to see as many sights as possible and boy was it a full day! We ALL (minus the three youngest) walked over 4 1/2 miles withOUT complaining (thanks to a little contest).

first highlight...the Metro!

We ended up seeing everything we wanted to. The weather was GORG!

first up...the capital...and across from that the Washington Memorial

then we picnicked and toured the Air and Space museum. It was neat to see the planet displays because we learned so much about them in Science two years ago and the kids remembered 'some' of it:). Then 're' learned some more. It was awesome to see the aircraft carrier and video/planes that land on it. Amazing. Of course the kids loved everything in the museum and learned a ton. Oh...I learned about the Wright Brothers and had no idea their first 'flight' only lasted 4 seconds! And Wilbur was the one to fly it because he lost a coin toss! Craziness!

sweet ephram fell asleep right about when we got to the planets and slept for a good 1 1/2 hours.

we went to the History museum next where the kids LOVED looking at all the animals. they also learned all about evolution and 'cave men'. apparently 'experts' now believe we all started as a rat like creature. there was a whole section of the museum dedicated to the evolution of man so between us adults we were sure to do a lot of teaching and reiterating scripture during our self made tour. we also saw dinosaurs, land animals, rain forest animals, arctic animals, sea animals, and more.

they were watching airplanes that looked like they were flying very close to the Washington memorial. i LOVE this picture of ephram walking with his rocks with the Capitol behind him.

WWII Memorial

Then we continued our LONG walk to the Lincoln Memorial where Cailey saw her favorite thing of the day....the Gettysburg address. We have been studying this time period in History so this was the perfect time to make this trip. The kids had just memorized the first couple paragraphs of it and were excited (especially Cailey) to see it up on the wall...and was SURE to recite it for everyone around:).

Laura Corbett asked her the other day (two weeks after the trip) what her favorite thing was and she still says seeing the Gettysburg Address. What a blessing that History can really come to life for them with us homeschooling. The kiddos and I RACED each other up to the top of the stairs...and Cailey would have won if I didn't make them stop for a picture. She beat me too:).

Braden was our HERO of the day and never complained and when offered always rejected piggy back rides and rides in the stroller. The girls didn't complain either but we did give them rides...but they all did awesome considering how long the walk back to the Metro was! We also saw the White House on our day trip in. One of the highlights on the way home was standing up and holding onto the 'pole'. So funny what they find joy in:)! The weather was perfect, the day was fun, and saw so much considering we were rushing home for another yummy dinner from nonny!

our strong bunch!
